BABETTE

It was a beautiful fall day and I really needed some time in the sun.  I talked my best friend Holly into going out in my Suburban (see previous post about the Suburban) to find a place to take pictures.  We weren't really sure where to go or what to take pics of.  Time was short, the kids would be coming home from school so we couldn't drive too far.

On a whim I took the turn-off to Farmington and on up to Farmington Pond.  There were many ducks, loons (what's a loon exactly?) and mallards.  A few Canadian geese were flying around and "skidding" playfully on the water as they landed.  It was a warm day, not many people there at all.
First we took pics of a "gaggle" of geese that were on a grassy patch just a few yards away from the parking lot.  There was one that took a particular disliking to me and did a fair job of "hissing" at me in his goosey little way.  As we made our way down to the water we saw many ducks--mallards, the "loons Norman the loons", and many plain "girl" ducks.  (Side note--why ARE female ducks SO plain looking?  Totally unfair, some are downright ugly!)

Anyhow, while taking pics of the aforementioned ducks there came a different, more lovely duck.  One that knew she was special.  She even had a few mallards following her around while we were there snapping shots.  She was definately on of a kind, a rare breed, a breed I know nothing of...OR a fortunate "cowlick" in her head-feathers, it's hard to say, but she knew she was "all that and a bag of chips",  you could just tell.  Holly decided she needed a befitting name and crowned her "Babette, Queen of Farmington Pond".  (I added the last part, for a little flourish and because I have a need to feel important.)

So I present to all of you....Babette!

Hysterical, I love the one of her walking to the right. Her body language says it all.

Isn't the one of her walking hilarious?! I've found a couple more photos I need to add. The kids found her quite amusing so I took them out on Sunday to see her for themselves. Jason said she was a plain, domestic white duck that had been pecked from behind! But alas, this is not true! I found pics of her family on the web under "domestic white crested duck", I think that was it. But she definitely was there under crested ducks.
